![]() ![]() ![]() I started watching the current BBC series (which on the whole faithfully reflects Macintyre’s book) but quickly decided to read the book, finishing it well before the end of the series. ![]() The staggering levels of eccentricity, oddness and bordering psychopathy that engendered the founding of this originally phantom regiment were clearly described, beginning with pocket biographies of Stirling, Lewes and Mayne. Macintyre plainly sets out his stall in the beginning, stating that this is the story of men who failed at peace, but succeeded at war. I knew a certain amount about David Stirling, but very little about the other original members of what became the Special Air Services. His usual journalistic approach, involving interviewing anyone still alive who participated was rather hampered by the fact that only one survivor, the navigating whiz Mike Sadler, is still alive (a feisty centenarian). Ben Macintyre is at the top of his game here with coveted access to the famous SAS war diary, he displays his usual measured but immensely readable style. Lady Caroline Lamb’s famous epithet on Lord Byron is a wonderfully appropriate description of the founders of this now famous regiment. The result is not just a tremendous war story, but a fascinating group portrait of men of whom history and country asked the most. Bringing his keen eye for psychological detail to a riveting wartime narrative, Ben Macintyre uses his unprecedented access to SAS archives to shine a light inside a legendary unit long shrouded in secrecy. He faced no little resistance from those who found his tactics ungentlemanly or beyond the pale, but in the SAS’s remarkable exploits facing the Nazis in the Africa and then on the Continent can be found the seeds of nearly all special forces units that would follow. Paired with his constitutional opposite, the disciplined martinet Jock Lewes, Stirling assembled a revolutionary fighting force that would upend not just the balance of the war, but the nature of combat itself. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II’s African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel’s desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war material. The incredible untold story of WWII’s greatest secret fighting force, as told by our great modern master of wartime intrigue Britain’s Special Air Service-or SAS-was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. ![]() Like Valvoline, Take 5 offers a drive through service that does not require an appointment. Take 5 is a lesser known oil change company that has locations in 18 states, from Wisconsin to Texas. Oil changes also include a multi-point inspection and a top-off of other fluids. Their “drive-thru oil change” is often discounted, and the company offers coupons that can be printed from its website. Like Jiffy Lube, Valvoline has locations in many areas across the country. Their pricing structure is similar to Walmart’s in that their basic oil changes start between $20 and $30 and range up to around $75, all of which depends on the region and oil change selected. Jiffy Lube has locations in several areas, but are completely absent from entire states, like in Maine. Costs range from around $30 to over $50, depending on the service. Offerings may differ from area to area, but generally, the retailer offers a few different tiers of oil changes that range from basic to the “power and performance” oil change. Like discount providers, Walmart heavily marks down the prices of their services to attract people to the shop. Most Walmart stores are considered “super”, which means that most also have an automotive repair facility attached to the store. The big oil change vendors are fine in a pinch. That said, maybe you noticed you needed an oil change while you were at work and it’s more convenient to do it near the office. Your neighborhood mechanic can often meet or beat a big retailer’s price, and also provide all your other automotive service needs, too. Plus, your local mechanic is generally your neighbor who lives in town, not some faceless corporation that pays the guy actually changing your oil as little as possible.Ĭheck in with these guys before you get lured in by any discount coupons from the big guys. Local guys need to make their boat payments, too. Your first choice in oil change vendors should be the guy that owns the garage up the street. We’ve even got a section of this website devoted to coupons at these places: Car Talk’s Top Parts and Services Coupons. ![]() Independent shops will also offer specials and discount periods around major holidays to get people out for an oil change. ![]() Many dealerships will offer free or reduced-price oil changes to customers that are in the shop for other reasons and often give out oil changes as part of new vehicle promotions. You do not need a coupon to get a good deal on an oil change, but they certainly don’t hurt. Do I need a Coupon to get a Deal on an Oil Change? Five quarts of synthetic, a filter, lubrication, and disposal is easily going to cost $45 at a quick lube franchise. Prices have certainly come down as synthetic becomes more and more a requirement from auto manufacturers, but a five-quart bottle of Mobil 1 is still going to run around $30 even if you do the job yourself. The short answer is that synthetic oil changes cost much more than standard oil changes. ![]() ![]() ![]() of Wisconsin - Platteville Midwest Senior Spotlight Meet Saturday, JMecalester College (MN) Section 4A Sectional Championship Meet Thursday, Princeton High School WIAA D3 Sectional Championship Meet Thursday, Boscobel High School WIAA D2 Sectional Championship Meet Monday, Lancaster High School WIAA D2 Regional Championship Meet Monday, Fennimore High School WIAA D3 Regional Championship Meet Friday, Huntley High School (IL) IHSA 3A Boys Sectional Championship Meet Thursday, Eau Claire Memorial High School Big Rivers JV Conference Championship Meet Wednesday, Central College (IA) Central Last Chance Open Tuesday, Prairie du Chien High School SWC Conference Championship Meet Tuesday, Boscobel High School SWAL Conference Championship Meet Monday, Univ. The support of multi-core processors and cleverly developed calculation rules allow significant speed advantages - in some cases, SilverFast 8 is almost up to 40 times faster than the previous version.īelow you will find a list of scanners for which SilverFast 8 is currently available. 32bit systems are as well supported as 64bit machines. SilverFast 8 is compatible with Windows 7, 8, Vista and XP, and it runs natively on Intel Mac OS X systems from version 10.5 (including 10.8 Mountain Lion - no PowerPC). SilverFast 8 supports the latest 64bit hardware and is therefore extremely fast and efficient. The user interface of SilverFast 8 is newly developed by current standards,įor the user can operate all major functions quickly and easily. The SilverFast Preview Concept allows to immediately see the result of any adjusted setting in the preview window. ![]() Turning your analog originals into convincing scans is so simply, because all complex operations become just a child's play for the user. ![]() The WorkflowPilot, a unique feature, is a core element of the new software.Īs a kind of assistant, it guides the user in the correct order through all processing steps required for his individual workflow. The combination of various innovative ideas and the integration of current software technology has created SilverFast 8 which is regarded as the best scanner software. The redevelopment of SilverFast has built on this wealth of experience. LaserSoft Imaging has gained 25 years experience in the development of imaging software. this solution applies on SilverFast 8 scanning software products as well.SilverFast 8 - the best scan software with an unique feature This does work on all our test systems and for all scanner models effected by this issue. No worries, it will be restarted as soon as another imaging device requires the service again. Here, search for the Service Description "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)", right-click it and stop the service. Please open the Windows Task Manager, click "More details" in the lower left corner and then navigate to "Services". Our favourite fix is, to stop the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" Service using the Windows Task Manager -> "Services" and then start SilverFast again. Often it already helps to unplug the scanner from the USB port and then reconnect it. At least until the computer is shut down and then switched back on again the next time. ![]() Some people say, that their scanner can be started correctly if they switch on the scanner before they start up the PC. Others report, reinstalling the scanner driver after a Windows reboot solves the issue. Please make sure to have the latest scanner drivers installed - or even better: reinstall them from the support website of your scanner manufacturer. Since we did not change anything about the scanner detection in SilverFast and the issue occurs independently from a SilverFast update / installation, we think that this behaviour is related to changes inside of the Windows operating system itself. We have reports from our users regarding this behaviour and have also been able to reproduce this here in our test center. Windows seems to behave erratically regarding the handling of imaging devices since the latest Windows updates (effected are Windows 10 as well as Windows 11 systems). Your scanner is recognised on the SilverFast welcome screen but as soon as you hit the "Start"-button, a message comes up saying that there is a problem regarding the communication between SilverFast and your scanner? ![]() |
